What is a jazz/swing group?
Jazz or swing group is a pretty global term.
Are you thinking of:
- a 1920’s charleston band?
- a swing band?
- a jive band?
- or a Rat Pack/Sinatra/Tony Bennett type band?
Maybe you want a jazz or swing group that
can play a number or all of these styles, and might include a costume
change!
Are you actually thinking of Trad Jazz or Dixie? Trad is a
recreation of the New Orleans style of early jazz. If you ‘re thinking
of the kind of jazz Humphrey Littleton plays, or Acker Bilk or John
Chiltons’ Feet Warmers, then you’re looking for a Trad Jazz Band.
Dixieland Jazz or New Orleans Jazz is a kind of mix of early blues,
ragtime and marching bands where the soloists (trumpet, clarinet and
trombone for example) will all solo together, playing all different
lines weaving in and out of each other over a steaming rhythm section.
A jazz swing group performs the kind of music that is irresistably
toe-tapping - think of Sinatra and you're halfway there! Swing is a
type of jazz, so a jazz swing group will definitely perform swing, and
maybe some kinds of jazz outside the strict definition of swing as well.
